What You Need for a Maternity Capsule Wardrobe

Being inside a body that is constantly morphing into a new shape can be challenging. The pre-pregnant body you once knew and trusted is growing in ways that can feel beyond your control, and, to top that off, you can no longer reach for your favorite pieces of clothing.

Rather than buy cheaply made maternity wear that you don’t love and doesn’t feel good, invest early in a few key pieces that will get you through nine months and beyond. Here are the 18 essential items we loved while pregnant:

Tops

Tanks — a classic tank is a closet staple thanks to their versatility. Wear it as loungewear, dress it up with a skirt, then wear it to work out — and you’ll certainly want to have a few maternity-ready styles on hand. Long styles, like this Isabel Maternity set, accommodate growing bumps and are easy to layer through the seasons.

Oversized Graphic Tee — find a classic cotton tee you love in a size or two larger. A statement tee like this Clare V. "Liberté, égalité, maternité" top can spark conversations about (or other than!) your pregnancy.

Versatile Blouse — an effortless blouse like Madewell’s Central Drapey Shirt is a no-brainer. You’ll look as chic running errands as you do at or on a work meeting.

Open Cardigan — boxy knits are a pregnancy must-have, whether you’re hiding a first-trimester bump or trying to find something to accommodate your third-trimester one. Look for oversized styles and robe silhouettes, like this from & Other Stories.

Bottoms

Ribbed Pencil Skirt — you can wear a stretchy midi skirt below your waist, thanks to its elastic band, or show off your bump by pulling the waistband over your belly. The Free People Skyline Midi Skirt is a favorite.

Maternity Jeans — if you splurge on any item, let it be a great pair of denim that will take you through every day of your pregnancy. A stretchy, skinny style like these Paige Verdugo Skinny Jeans balance out the larger proportions of boxy tops.

Leggings for Lounge or Fitness — you’ll need a trusted pair of comfy leggings just about every day. This stretchy pair from Storq will let you work from home, wear out under tunics or dresses, and tackle low-impact workouts.

Everyday Dress — a billowy sundress, tiered midi dress Tired style oversized/floaty midi length dress, adjustable straps, billowy and versatile like this MLM Label Flora Midi Dress.

Occasion Dress — be ready for social events, baby showers, or just a day you want to feel fancy with a floaty dress that you can dress up and down. A personal favorite, Doen, has lots of ethereal styles that are perfect for pregnancy (and nursing) but don’t feel “maternity.”

Swimsuit — you’ll likely crave the anti-gravity gift of water as your belly grows, so find a suit that you can pack on a babymoon or take to the local pool. Look for retro styles with belted waists, similar to this Yasmin seersucker suit, that can get you through the first few months. H&M, Asos, and Pink Blush have lots of options for the larger bellied months.

Intimates & Accessories

Lounge Bralette — we love this Aerie Seamless Strappy Padded Bralette with soft, ribbed fabric.

Wireless Bra with Nursing Clips — try the Lively wireless bra with detachable straps for nursing.

Supportive Sports Bra — you’ll want to look for a zip-front sports bra with a ventilated mesh back to keep you cool, and a stretchy, soft-cup design. This Lululemon Swift Speed Bra comes with adjustable straps, perfect fluctuating cup sizes.

Supportive Belly Band — a breathable, lightweight belly band will help relieve some of the pressure baby is putting on your back all day. Our favorite styles have velcro closures, like this from Amazon, that you can adjust each month.

Shoes

Walking Sandal — pregnant feet need extra TLC. Invest in an open sandal with a supportive footbed to support your arches and accommodate swelling throughout the day. The classic Birkenstock Arizona is a great choice, thanks to its adjustable straps and shock-absorbing sole.

Everyday Flat — keep a neutral flat on hand that you can dress up or down to wear anywhere. The sophisticated silhouette and warm hue of this Rothy’s ‘The Point’ fits the bill.

Winter Boot — look for a forgiving material, like Rothy’s Merino Ankle Boot made of merino wool and recycled plastic bottles that stretches with your feet.

Workout Sneaker — for workouts or days with lots of walking, keep close a neutral-colored pair of sneakers, like these Adidas NMDs.
